Overview

In 2006, Nippon Ichi Software remade the original Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the PSP under the new title Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. Series' composer Tenpei Sato offered several new tracks for the release, which are compiled together in the Makai Senki Disgaea Portable Original Maxi Single available with the limited edition version of the game. Is it worthwhile?

Body

The first of the three tracks, "Welcome to the New World", is only a 15 second jingle. Nevertheless, it's an enjoyable one, perfectly capturing that mischievious jazzy sound that featured throughout the Disgaea: Hour of Darkness score.

"Nightmare Heroine" is a vocal theme to portray the new protagonist of the title. While not on par with the best from the original game, it's nevertheless a highly charming and accomplished theme, mixing Miki's peppy vocals with Sato's characteristic jazz instrumentals. It's relieving that the composer can keep coming up with fresh vocal themes for the series.

The final addition, "How is the New Demon King's Castle?", exudes an even more jazzy feel than the previous two tracks. The use of muted trumpets and clarinets here certainly brings back memories of the swing era, yet Sato's personal touches are still present to ensure the music still sounds like it belongs in a Disgaea game. Excellent overall.

Summary

There is little to fault about this single other than its length. Sato still knows how to offer that distinctive Disgaea sound while offering fresh new elements to the series. Hardcore Disgaea collectors will find it a good bonus with the game, though most others will be safe sticking to the main soundtrack for the original game.
