Overview

The Unlimited SaGa Maxi Single CD was packaged with the limited edition of the game in Japan. It features three of the soundtrack's most memorable tracks, namely the game's rousing full-orchestral overture, upbeat main battle theme, and classically-oriented vocal theme.

Body

The opening overture introduces Unlimited SaGa's unforgettable main theme in remarkable fashion. Initially fragmented as the charming melody passes through a variety of instruments, soft strings gently meander against thick luscious harmonies to create a serene yet imposing atmosphere. With the entrance of a brash militaristic fanfare, the theme heightens and the main melody is delivered in full form before concluding with a rousing coda.

The normal battle theme for Unlimited SaGa is impressive. Structured in a variation of rondo form, its first section comprises of a solo violin interpreting the game's main theme in a bouncy way against bossa nova accompaniment. While it sounds improbable, it works a treat in context and is highly enjoyable out of context too.

The vocal theme "Soaring Wings" is largely disappointing. Despite the beautiful soprano voice of Mio Kashiwabara, it lacks a particularly memorable melody. In addition, it seems to blend influences from operatic aria and J-Pop hits somewhat haphazardly, resulting in a bland overall sound. It's hardly awful, but not up to the standard of Final Fantasy's vocal themes.

Summary

While most will find the promotional soundtrack a more consistent offering than the soundtrack, it is aalso very limiting. For instance, it omits the soundtrack's various electronica wonders, mostly excellent character themes, and other diverse offerings. While a decent promotional item, it doesn't get to the heart of the original score on a musical or emotional level.
